When the Uchegbu People Empowerment Foundation designs training for widows, we ask one question above all others: will this skill actually put food on her table?
After years of working with widows across Anambra, Enugu, Rivers, Oyo, Benue, and Delta States, these are the six vocational skills that consistently produce real, lasting income for the women we train.
1. Catering and Small-Scale Food Production
Food is always in demand in Nigeria. From office canteens to event catering, from packaged snacks to local restaurants, Nigerians love to eat well and are willing to pay for it. A widow with cooking skills and proper training in food safety, packaging, costing, and marketing can build a stable client base within months.
Our catering graduates supply offices, cater small events, and sell packaged food products through WhatsApp and local markets. Several have grown from home kitchens to small registered catering businesses within eighteen months.
2. Tailoring and Fashion Design
Nigeria’s fashion market is enormous and growing. From Ankara designs to school uniforms, the demand for skilled tailors in local communities is constant. We teach not just sewing but how to take orders, price work correctly, and manage the business side.
3. Soap and Cosmetics Production
Handmade soaps, body creams, hair oils, and skincare products are a fast-growing market in Nigeria. Startup costs are low, margins are strong, and the skills are learnable in weeks. Several of our graduates sell products to customers across multiple states through WhatsApp Business and Instagram.
4. Hair Care and Beauty Services
Hair braiding, weaving, wig making, and basic beauty services are in constant demand in every Nigerian community. A widow who operates a home-based salon or visits clients at home can earn daily income without formal premises.
5. Agricultural Processing
In many states, widows have access to farmland but lack knowledge to increase its value through processing. Training in garri production, groundnut oil pressing, tomato paste making, and dried fish processing can turn a subsistence farm into a small business — particularly powerful in the South-East, Middle Belt, and South-South.
6. Petty Trading and Retail Management
Many widows already have some experience in small-scale buying and selling. What they often lack is knowledge of inventory management, pricing strategy, basic accounting, and digital tools like mobile banking. Our retail management training builds on what they already know.
